Care Consultants for the Aging was started in 1991 by Virginia Williams and Rose Ann Opperman. At the time, both women were taking care of elderly parents and were overwhelmed with trying to find services for them. Realizing they were not the only ones feeling this frustration, they decided to create a book outlining resources available for the elderly in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. Thus began the first component of Care Consultants for the Aging, the
ElderCare Resource Handbook.
While researching for the
Handbook, Virginia and Rose Ann realized another need in the community. People kept asking how it was possible to balance independence with the care they needed in order to be safe and healthy. They were looking for caregivers to go into the home but needed a service that was less expensive and gave them more control than traditional options. Virginia and Rose Ann then began the Caregiver Registry component of Care Consultants for the Aging.
In 1998, Care Consultants for the Aging's Lincoln office opened its doors offering the same much needed services. Since then, Care Consultants for the Aging has referred qualified companions, CNAs, and nurses to thousands of individuals and assisted them to stay independent in their own homes. They have also continued to publish updated editions of the
ElderCare Resource Handbook every 2 years for both the Omaha and Lincoln communities.
In 2008, Care Consultants for the Aging opened its third office in Des Moines, Iowa and began referring caregivers to older adults in Polk County. They are proud to introduce the premier edition of the Des Moines
ElderCare Resource Handbook, released in June of 2009.
Since they began their dream of giving others options they did not have with their own mothers, both Virginia and Rose Ann have passed away. Virginia's daughter now continues providing these services that her mother and mentor found so necessary over fifteen years ago and carries on their mission "to provide the elderly and their adult children with assistance in achieving a continued independent living style."
